I have to go mucking around with plugins to get Flash out of my face on OS X, compared to the iPhone, which does it for me.

All jokes aside, I personally dont like Flash, but Im not quite sure I see the evil of just having the option for it on the iPhone.

I certainly hope that the resolution on the Apple Movie Store will be AT LEAST 480x720 (aka 480P). Otherwise, between Netflix and super cheap DVDs these days, I don't see how Apple can compete with lower than DVD resolution.

If they are really smart (and the studios play ball, which is doubtful) they would go straight to 1080P.

I agree with you on the DVD quality. But could imagine how long it would take to downlaod a 1080p film? Days! The hard drive space would be another thing, it would be about 10 or 11 gigs for one film! At least. This is not going to be possible for at least 3 or 4 years I would say.

Um, yeah, tell me something i don't know. The question we are pondering is why more blacks live in poor areas with high crime rates than other races.

This is basic history. Beginning in the early 20th century, several waves of black emigration took place from the rural south to industrialized urban centers, primarily in the north. This was known as the "Great Migration" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Migration_(African_American)) (search this on Google Books for plenty of literature on the subject) - this, by the way, also contributed to falling numbers of lynchings by the KKK, because blacks simply fled from areas where such violence was taking place. This was done in order to try and escape Jim Crow as well as find better job opportunities. Just as all minority or immigrant groups do in cities, they tended to concrentrate in the same districts for mutual support. There is nothing specifically "black" about displaced people moving to cities looking for better opportunities. As a group they started at the economic bottom of the barrel, why would be shocked that they their socioeconomic status remains lower than whites, who outnumber them, have far more political and economic power, and have a history of discriminating against them that they is only slowly being reversed?

Well, seeing how blacks commit more violent crimes than whites

    That is completely false. (http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_43.html)

it seems logical that a white trailer park would be safer than a black ghetto.

First it was "common knowledge", now it's logic. I still see it as an irrelevant, unproven assertion.

Name me one single white gang that you've heard of(and not the KKK, they don't terrorize streets anymore, that's sooo 1960's)

Since when did you get to make the rules? How can we possibly have a useful discussion about race and crime if we can't talk about some of the basic underlying causes for the disparity in wealth and political power in America between white people and everybody else? Why should we forget the 3/5ths clause, Dred Scott, the Civil War, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement or the KKK and its children. Not to mention the slave trade that brought these people here in the first place. You might not like to talk about all those things, but you are flat out ignoring or dismissing their impact on current issues - and that is the fatal flaw in your reasoning. Your "ponderings" are based on casual observation and a lack of historical or even contemporary context.

I don't see how the issue can be boiled down to listing gangs either. Do only gangs commit crime? There isn't a shred of evidence out there that white people are any more or less likely to commit crime than any other race, or that white people are inherently more prosperous or law-abiding than any other race. Focusing on race itself is always a red herring when talking about crime. The real reasons lie in the mechanics of interaction between different groups.

It's also worth mentioning that over 70% (http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/hc2009/incidents.html) of hate crimes involve an anti-black bias.

They make cars in the US, and domestic cars are typically less expensive than foreign ones. This argument really doesn't fly.

Stop making excuses for US companies that build their products elsewhere. We CAN manufacture things in this country; we used to do it a lot more and the products were affordable.

My Apple IIe says "Made in the USA" on the bottom. It's sad that we never see that on computers anymore.

But do Americans REALLY want to be building laptops/ipods/ipads? i think society in developed countries such as the states has vigorously changed since 20 years ago.

Extended warranties aren't always bad though - you think I want to deal with Sling if my Solo goes on the fritz? I was happy to pay a bit extra for the security of knowing I could go back to BB for two years (especially since reviews on Amazon have consistently pointed to issues shortly after the one year mark).

And I definitely wish I'd gotten it for my HDTV whose screen crapped out at 18 mos.

It was $20 off. It came to $248 and some change so basically tax gets taken off in NY.

The "industry pros" are facing the plight of impending impotence.

Meh -- there was similar consternation with the original Mac, LaserWriter and PageMaker from the professional printers. And as then, it still is at the end of the day just a tool. The real talent is in how the tool is wielded.

Those that have at true talent have little to fear. Those that are more marginal... well, time marches on.

I know right, a long time ago I took a friend to a grand opening of a mac store and they had door prizes...he won an iMac, he instantly became a PC turned Mac person, now he owns more Apple stuff than I do.

Oh yea, I got a door prize too...accounting software

More megapixels can mean equal or better quality at a larger resolution or worse quality at a larger resolution. It all depends on how they cram in the extra pixels. If they cram them into the same size sensor as a 5MP, then it would result in lower quality, but larger pictures. If they increase the sensor size, which would require a longer focal length, then you would have equal or better quality at a larger resolution. The problem with increasing the focal point is the iPhone's thin design. They would have to move sensor further away from the lens in order for it to focus properly. I believe Apple did go with a larger sensor in the iPhone 4.

Which they worked on for nearly two years. And in the iPhone 5, will be even larger sensors, that have been worked on, for the last year and half.

As much as im not a fan of the iMacs, the price/performance value is impressive. The 24" on an iMac is a little impractical for me...on a standard display yes ...on an iMac no. If i were to buy one (which i'm tempted to) i'd get the 20" model and max it out. Still i prefer the MacPro. Maybe the family will get one for the new desk in the living area as a central system. Good job Apple, while i knew you'd pick meroms i was hoping you'd go with Conroe especially with a 24" version. Oh well.....

I think that is about right. Macs are still a premium and premium priced product. There is a limited market that can afford premium priced products. You can get a mini-tower system from HP/Dell/Acer for $700 and it costs > $2000 to get a similar performing system from Apple (even if the Apple does come with more "features"). Many people can't afford or justify the price difference.

Please. A Macbook costs about $1,000. There will be people who deliberately go for something cheaper, but the majority of people can _afford_ it. The "similarly performing system" to the mini tower is the iMac for $1199. And people who are poor but clever know that in the long term, quality is cheaper - usually the best thing to buy is the cheapest of the best, which would be for example the MacBook. It will still be running fine when you bought the second replacement for a cheaper laptop.

Which reminds me that when people look at these sales numbers, they look at unit sales. They don't look at revenue. But how are you going to compare, if customer A buys one MacBook and uses it for five years, while customer B buys a cheap laptop every two years? Makes me wonder what is the percentage of Macs in actual use.

And all the Apple haters claim the "iToys" are responsible for the immense growth. Nah, people just want a PC that works and its called a Mac!

iPod, iPhone and iPad _are_ brilliant advertising for the Mac, so they surely help selling Macs by making people look at them and considering them. Once people look at them, they are quite good at selling themselves. Obviously the haters always claim that people buying either Macs or iDevices are just gullible idiots and Apple's success is due to marketing alone. How stupid do they think people are?

Sarcasm? Hard to tell. It's more polite to use some indication (smiley, text note) since there are many non-native English participants on this forum.

Much more important and polite is to write in clear and error-free English. For example, "could of" instead of "could have" doesn't make any sense whatsoever to someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with the English language. To a native English reader, "there" and "they're" is basically the same word (most recognise if the wrong one is used but it doesn't stop them understanding); to a non-native reader, they are totally, completely different and using the wrong one turns a simple sentence into a puzzle.

Until Adobe can get FLASH working properly on Macs, why the hell would I want it on my damn phone?

On Macs, FLASH causes Safari 4 to crash often, is slow and downright buggy.
Some sites work fine, others crash the browser, often a reboot is required to get a Flash site working after a crash. This is all completely unacceptable in my opinion.

If your teenager crashed one of your cars, why the hell would you immediately give him the keys to another one?

When Adobe fixes FLASH for Macs, then and ONLY THEN should Apple say, hey let's talk about the iPhone now.
Those should be Apple's terms, plain and simple.
